Jason Momoa has islander uncle energy irl. I met him at a convention as a kid (fan of Stargate) and I may as well have been his niece. Very nice guy.

611

u/samojoy 10d ago

Truth, we all love him in Hawaii. He’ll be driving around the north shore in an old lifted yota just like everyone else blasting his music. He looks out for our community. Hard not to love the guy.

My brother met him at a bar during a convention. Jason sat next to my brother and his fiance. Just sat and talked, that's all. Shot the shit. Eventually the word got out Jason Mamoa was at x bar and the bar got swamped. My brother wished him well and left. He's a cool dude. Gave my brother a signed poster after a few minutes of normal conversation.

59

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 10d ago

I love the story where he'd just been cast as Aquaman and a journalist asked him if he could swim. He just smiled and said "Bro. I'm Hawaiian".

113

u/hazdrubal 10d ago

I grew up with a lot of Polynesians, most Samoans outside of Samoa. I totally get that uncle energy!

69

u/Siilan 10d ago

Grew up in Australia, and one of my best mates was a Samoan named PJ. During our graduation, there was a decent amount of applause for everyone receiving their certificates, as you'd expect. Then PJ got called up, and I kid you not, the entire graduating year of like 800 students ROARED as he went up. Everyone in the school loved that dude, but our year especially, as we just spent the past 5 years with him.

Our friend group had hired a limo for the after-graduation formal, but we got screwed over by the company. You know PJ did? He got his family's mini-van, decked it out in fairy lights, and had his sister drive us to the formal. All while blaring Queen.

16

u/Gristley 10d ago

My family friends were Samoan with the grandpa being the one actually from there. I've never met a more pleasant joyous genuine man. Cancer took him real slow in the end. It was awful seeing such a big personality crushed like that.

175

u/Ok-Champ-5854 10d ago

Took me a hot second to process what you meant by islander uncle for some reason and I was just like "are uncles that are fans of the Islanders better people or something?"

Yeah islander like Pacific Islander. Tito is actually a great example.

26

u/theflyingkiwi00 10d ago

Yeah, all islanders have a super chill uncle, super proud of their heritage and will give you the shirt off their own back. Dunno what it's like in Hawaii but alot of the Pacific Islands are quite religious but in a let's see if we can out nice Jesus kinda way.

u/Nice-Violinist-6395 10d ago

I am not often one for hyperbole, but this is the single most badass thing I’ve heard this year, and maybe in the top 5 ever.

“I’m kind of heavy.” “That’s okay, I’m kind of strong.”

What’s the point of lifting all that weight every day for decades if not for this moment? If not to literally and metaphorically lift someone up?

I don’t subscribe to the whole “alpha” thing. But with that said, this is some Superman shit.

454

u/PaperOptimist 10d ago

I have (thankfully) never been seduced by the "alpha" thing. But Superman as a goal? Someone who is so sincere about helping everyone that his best dramatic situations are how he copes with the reality of not being able to help everyone? That's the kind of fairytale heroism I love. The kind of mindset that hears "I'm kind of heavy" and then says (in so many words), "I will still show you that you are worth effort and care."

151

u/Any-Particular-1841 10d ago

"Sometimes I despair the world will never see another man like him".

For being Aquaman, this statement is incredibly superman. It's friendly, reassuring, and promises your safety in a way you didn't think possible.

Like though I'm more a batman fan, I've already got my perfect trilogy, and this is the kinda energy a new superman needs. And....I think people kinda need that now. They need hope when quite frankly everything seems hopeless, against a villain who is literally evil cause he's a billionaire who believes he owes people nothing.

103

u/Nice-Violinist-6395 10d ago

Yep. I actually just said that lol. This is one of the most Superman things I’ve ever heard.

As my dad always said, the point of Superman is a story about a man strong and powerful enough to rule the world, except it never occurs to him

— because he’s too good of a person.

Not a human, of course, but the most human out of all of us.

42

u/Straviradius 10d ago edited 10d ago

I've always liked the concept of Superman being a superhero who puts on the costume of a normal person in a world of people who put on a costume to be superheroes.

I'd love to see a superman struggling with putting on the guise of humanity because he knows that it would be easy to do anything he wanted, but he values human life so much that he finds it abhorrent to abuse his great power.

18

u/TuckerMcG 10d ago

Strong guys don't really get to use strength in their day-to-day. Feels good when the rare opportunity arises.

60

u/PoorlyLitKiwi2 10d ago

Jason Momoa is an avid climber, probably because it allows him to use his strength a ton

53

u/DieSchadenfreude 10d ago

Climber strength is the crazy sort of strength too. It's not something.you can get from weightlifting alone. It really takes a more full comprehensive approach.

46

u/Redtinmonster 10d ago

Friends took me climbing. I'm not unfit. The next day I was hurting in places that I didn't think humans had muscles.

7

u/Theriderfan 10d ago

9

u/realmastodon2 10d ago

Climbing is more functional than weightlifting. You're actively using more muscles while climbing. It is also feels natural for a lot of people when climbing. Weightlifting is good and useful but climbing goes to another level. Plenty of lifters take climbing classes to improve their backs and arms.

“It’s only now that I realize how fortunate I was with that, because that could have gone many, many, many different ways. Because Jason had experience, he had done a bunch of stuff before coming on to this, he was like, ‘Sweetie, this is how it’s meant to be and this is how it’s not meant to be, and I’m going to make sure that’s the way it goes. From what I've heard, basically the execs for GoT kept pushing for more and more nudity, more sex, basically to make it as close to porn as possible even though several actresses were super uncomfortable - like crying before, during, and after scenes. He argued against it.

69

u/nos6a2 10d ago

Honestly, there was only one nude scene in the entire show that it could be argued needed to be there and presented as it was, and that was the scene after Danerys walks out of the ashes of the burial pyre. Looking at it in context of the story you get the shock of thinking "holy shit, she is fireproof".

And even that could absolutely have been shot from different angles and still had the same effect.

6

u/DragonfruitFew5542 10d ago

I met him once at a bar, and when my friends bothered him for a picture I made sure to stay away so as to not be a menace to his celebrity.

He saw me on the other side of the room and insisted I joined the photo.

That’s a good man if I’ve ever met one.

191

u/Chapstickie 10d ago

That was super sweet of him. It was good of you to be polite and gracious of him to realize that there was no way it’s what you actually wanted and insist you come over. What a good guy.

24

u/Gristley 10d ago

This is what I've always hated about seeing celebrities in public. People pester them for photos and you don't because it's polite and you just want them to be able to go about their day. But you still would've loved a photo :(

59

u/Jasani 10d ago

I'd believe it. My brother was already at the bar when Jason Mamoa sat next to him and his fiance during a convention. Just sat and talked. Gave my brother a poster since my brother knew him and was nice. Eventually the bar got swamped by convention attendees

85

u/jasoner2k 10d ago

I had a couple of friends in a rock band in LA about 15 years ago -- one of the band members was a friend of Jason's as well. The band was playing a gig at a small club and there were maybe 8 people at the show. We all get hammered and start an 8 man mosh pit in an empty little club. Jason full on knocked me on my ass ... and immediately helped me back up. We were laughing and spilling our drinks everywhere but there was no one in the club to get mad at us (other than the bartender). After our friends set ended we all rolled out (and I mean rolled) onto the street to smoke cigarettes and we all laughed our asses off. We were all of us 86'd from that club from that night on. Dude is a legit LEGEND.

“Mentsh”, the Yiddish term, translates to “honorable person” that comes from several different words in German; mensch, mensche, mennisko, etc.

Yiddish is a combination of Hebrew and German.

Yiddish originated in the 9th, 10th, or even 12th century depending on who you talk to… and actually is named after the German word for “Jewish”.

Yiddish colloquialism has made its way into every day language thought it’s often passed over of Germanic origin.

Our Jewish Brethren are frequently erased despite our vast affects on history!

Please share when it calls for it and when you can ❤️

Yiddish is a combination of Hebrew and German.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

Mensch is german for human (so unfortunately not the humbling meaning it apparently originally hadhas now in english (thx u/calliope719).

Part of it survived in "menschlichkeit", which means to be kind, have human dignity to others.

I really like the meaning of the english (jiddisch) Mensch, not such a word in german (Nobel or Ritter maybe, but both have - in comparison to "mensch" - a deprecatary touch).

(so unfortunately not the humbling meaning it apparently originally had).

That's not the original meaning. The German one is.

The Yiddish meaning is the newer one.

My Gramma was a "ww2 bride." Gorgeous woman in her teens and early twenties; tall, slender, dark eyes and dark hair, growing up in Antwerp/the Flanders (region extremely sympathetic to Nazis, even today). We were told stories of her seducing Nazis in order to smuggle supplies through checkpoints. She even told us grandkids about hearing the bullets whiz past her head on at least one occasion.

The only way to aggravate the woman was to say the word "German." She would get inexplicably angry lol, called them "pizzants" with of bunch of other foreign words.

Anyway she lived out the rest of her years in Kansas, relatively peacefully, with her family and legacy firmly intact.

I have a lot of questions about her short time in Europe, unfortunately the time to ask passed almost 20 years ago. But the fact that she spoke more Yiddish than Flemish when she was angry has always stuck out to me.

Edit: and within -2 minutes u/wolkenbaer adds premium context lol

Yiddish was my grandparents’ native tongue and I still yearn to know more of it because it’s such a great language.

28

u/Adamthe_Warlock 10d ago

Did you know Leonard nemoy recorded several Yiddish folk song albums? I’ve not listened to many because I don’t understand it but I’ve always thought it was a neat thing he never got much recognition for.

Oh, that would be so cool if places had platforms to help raise a person up for a picture.

Not to hide their accessories, but just something like a 2 foot tall platform (with proper ramp and such) so people in the picture can be closer together.

u/ktrainor59 10d ago

Some cosplay shoots do have risers for that reason.

37

u/SecretDracula 10d ago

I don't even know how you'd go about asking someone in a wheel chair if they didn't want the wheelchair in the shot

15

u/Gayporeon 10d ago

Yeah, that seems very difficult. Maybe there was an obvious height difference that made framing the photo difficult, and he asked if she would like him to get down low or to help her stand?

If Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves approached a door together, who would go first?

65

u/stevein3d 10d ago

Momoa would punch a new door. Then they’d go through their respective doors at the same time, but Keanu would come back to sweep up the mess and dispose of it in a proper container.

One time at a comic con, during peak the walking dead popularity, I ran into Robert Kirkman just walking around. We stopped him and talked to him and asked him to sign our books. I apologized foe bothering him and before I could even finish my apology he cut me off and said it wasn't necessary and that me, and people like me, have given his family everything they have, he was eternally grateful to us and signing our books was the least he could do.

He truly meant that because after a panel he set up a table impromptu and didn't leave until everyone there had an opportunity to meet him and get an autograph or picture, or whatever.

I truly admire public figures that realize we make their life possible and give back.

Daenerys was basically sold to him... lmao

29

u/pornaccount123456789 10d ago

Yeah Khal Drogo is objectively a bad guy. He’s basically Genghis Khan. Jason Momoa seems to be a much better person than Khal Drogo

22

u/InnerObesity 10d ago

Yeah, in the book it's much more explicit, but even in the show, she basically decides to seduce him so he'll stop raping her. It works and then they build a more equitable partnership.

Not that this should reflect on Momoa in any way, the guy is a treasure that must be protected at all costs. Just saying, citing that fictional "romance" as evidence... maybe not the best way to convey this.

We, as Redditors, tend to fall to pieces over the likes of Henry Cavill & Keanu Reeves. We should keep doing so, but I see absolutely no reason Jason Momoa shouldn’t be part of this pantheon.

Quick reminder that The 1st thing that let Daenerys fall in love was that he asked for consent. Unlike in the show.
