In 2003 Coolio graciously accepted an invite after a show to hang with students at their dorm, where he cooked them a meal and sang this acoustic version of Gangster's Paradise Misleading Title

Oh, so this is how I find out Coolio died. Ok

946

u/WellTrained_Monkey Sep 29 '22

Right?! This was the second post I saw about Coolio on the front page and my first thought was, "oh shit, did he die?!"

164

u/businessowl Sep 29 '22

Saw the second headline and had to go google. I assume I'll scroll down a bit more and see the actual story about his death

65

u/Octo-The-8 Sep 29 '22

Same, saw 2 posts then went to BBC news site an sure enough one of the top stories id he dead

113

u/Seattleopolis Sep 29 '22

That's so weird... I just watched Gordon Ramsey on Hot Ones yesterday, and when he asks if they've ever killed anybody, the host says they haven't heard from Coolio in a while...

14

u/Metaltiby666 Sep 29 '22

Same bro. The short just popped up yesterday for me!

I saw one TIL this morning and when I turned the radio on there was an interview with Coolio playing on one of the breakfast shows. I immediately thought, "Wow, that's weird, two things about Coolio in one day, he must be doing a tour or a book or something".

Nope, it's the 3rd reason.

I got about halfway through the video and thought, someone who isn't currently famous pops up in the feed for something they did 20 years ago.

He's dead isn't he?

13

u/dodadoBoxcarWilly Sep 29 '22

The thought didn't even cross my kind. This video was also posted just a few years ago. This isn't the first time I've seen it, so assumed it was just making rounds again.

6

u/somanyroads Sep 29 '22

Well, 9 years ago actually...video quality is way too good for 2003, because you can tell it was shot on a phone. Plus...Coolio is practically bald, which wasn't the case in his heydey.

It really demonstrates how most people have no idea what makes up a good song. These people could barely keep up the effort for the 3-5 mins it takes to get through that song.

8

u/Dr_Colossus Sep 29 '22

Stevie wonder orchestrated everything to be honest. Most people don't realize that gangsters paradise is just Pastime paradise by Stevie Wonder.

I have no idea how that's so overlooked.

6

u/Deedledroxx Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

This was my University in Preston! I remember this. The guitarist was a guy on my mate's course (Pharmacy I think) and we couldn't believe he just bought coolio a drink and then hung out with him after until we saw the video. Nearly completely forgot about this. Wow, RIP

81

u/ExtraEvilJesus Sep 29 '22

Thank god you said this. I was thinking 'That's the most UK-looking dorm I've ever seen'

36

u/head_face Sep 29 '22

That's probably just a regular house rented out by students. Until fairly recently uk students would normally only live in halls/dorms in the first year then break off into groups to rent private accommodation.

8

u/frenchhouselover Sep 29 '22

I thought the same! The blue sticker on the door is a dead giveaway

He has his own cookbook titled Cookin’ with Coolio. Supposedly he’s been cooking since he was a child and had to make do with whatever they had at the time.

996

u/cefriano Sep 29 '22 Wholesome

I’ve had that book for years, never actually made a recipe from it. Tonight in honor of Coolio I decided to try my hand at his Popcorn Steak. Turned out pretty good!

The cookbook is hilarious, with chapter titles like “Appetizers for That Ass,” “It’s Hard Out Here for a Shrimp,” and “Vegetarian? Okay, whatever!” He measures ingredients in “dime bags” and “peenches.” He says things like, “You need to let your flavors coagulate, motherfucker!” One thing I really appreciate is that he doesn’t use any fancy ingredients, everything can be made on a budget. I think I spent like $12 on all the ingredients I needed for the popcorn steak.

He must have been a really fun dude to be around.

6

SOS remains one of my all-time favorite breakfast dishes. In my case, it was my grandad who introduced me to it. As good as it is, it's also the memories of him that make that dish special.

6

u/BearJew1991 Sep 29 '22

Absolutely. So many memories of people we love get associated with food. That grandmom and SOS, diners, and holiday brisket and matzo ball soup. My other granny with with pastries, tea, her lemon chicken, and her salt and pepper kugel. My grandfather with his daily bowl of raisin bran which to this day is my favorite cereal. The taste is absolutely enhanced by my fondness for those memories.

I was actually thinking of what kind of video camera they were using to take this video. Smart phones didn't exist, digital camera video quality was much lower in 2003 so this is either a handheld camcorder or the date was wrong. Then I saw the macbook when he sat up.

14

u/toasterb Sep 29 '22

Yup. The MBP was the first thing and then I noticed the video quality. I was in university in 2003 and I don’t even think any of my friends had digital cameras that shot video back then!

It’s not just the quality too — it’s the aspect ratio. There weren’t many (if any!) consumer video cameras that shot in widescreen back then.

u/Throwaway_97534 Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

Well there wasn't until that moment... he freestyled that. You can see his expression change to that contemplative freestyle look just before he starts, I knew something was about to happen.

Edit: ah ha, it's from another one of his songs, Life!

67

u/_high_plainsdrifter Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

The lyrics themselves were from another song of his, “Life” off Coolio.com that came out in like 2000. There was also a remixed version on the True Crime: Streets of L.A. soundtrack that would’ve came out circa 2003.

So freestyling in a sense of combining some existing verses of songs together, but it wasn’t off the dome freestyling of that last verse. He literally says “remix” before that 4th verse. Most people only know his most popular few songs, so not shocking that it comes off as something in the moment to people watching the video.

Edit: https://youtu.be/gWhf4tRNn0o @ 1:11, verse two he starts off with the Okay now here’s the situation…

u/halow1213 Sep 29 '22

The term freestyle is actually what you are refering to. You write something and are able to adapt it to any beat or sound hence its called free style. The term you are looking for is improvisation which is when you do it on the fly.

I love this kind of feel good story. Wynton Marsalis did a master class at my son's college at the University of Kentucky. Afterwards he sat casually on a table in a hall way for a couple hours chatting, answering questions and just being an all around nice guy. These music kids, especially the trumpet players, were so in awe of him and he just took it all in stride. RIP Coolie. You were a hero in my opinion.

This man has the hair of the gods

I remember seeing him strut through the St James Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, about 25 years ago with his two bodyguards.

He was surprisingly short in real life and these two guys flanking him were like 6’5’’.

I believe he had been playing the liquid rooms the night before.

Walked out to the revolving doors at the back and it was pishing rain and his two bodyguards whipped out a brolly each and put them over his head while they got soaked on either side of him, and off they went.

And that’s the story about the time I saw Coolio in the St James Centre.

This is fucking dope. I love how he’s all in on this and wants everyone to go for it.

Sees this post: “oh wow Coolio was a cool dude… hope he’s doing well”

Imagine being someone close to him like his mom and seeing this for the first time after he passed away.

4

u/Kruse Sep 29 '22

Can you imagine how many times this night has been talked about among that friend group?

u/Fugglesmcgee Sep 29 '22

Is it just me, or is the room a little hazy?

That’s a unibody Mac laptop. This happened in at least the 2010s. Cell phone videos from 2003 were also much worse quality, basically didn’t exist.

See 3 Coolio related links on front page, guess Coolio died today.

7

u/autoHQ Sep 29 '22

Do you think famous artists love singing that 1 song that people know them for?

Seems like it would be kind of annoying after the 50th time. It's like that "say the line, Bart" meme.

This was actually in 2013 at Uclan Preston. I was studying there at the time and I believe there were claims of his seed spreading 😂

Coolio: pick up the tempo man

White frat kid: ...No.

16

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '22

I thought Coolio's gesture was to play louder

29

u/10000Didgeridoos Sep 29 '22

Why does reddit call every single white male in university/college a frat kid? Makes zero fucking sense

18

u/techno_babble_ Sep 29 '22

We don't even have frats in the UK. Thankfully.

10

u/Dreacle Sep 29 '22

A few prats though, and twats, thankfully no frats.

u/X4ulZ4n Sep 29 '22

I was one of those students. One of the weirdest nights of my life.

3

u/cancelingchris Sep 29 '22

good weird or bad weird lol

5

u/X4ulZ4n Sep 29 '22

Good weird, just strange. I was already back at the digs when Coolio turns up with some of the students I was living with and proceeds to show us how to cook prior to this video. We were at university in Preston, UK...it's quite a surreal place for this to happen.

u/Last_Gigolo Sep 29 '22

Back in the day, I was all metal and rock and hated hearing this song on the radio all of the damn time. I loved the chorus. It was great harmony and the message was wonderful. The lyrics were excellent explanation of the world form his view.

Okay, that's out of the way. I thought this guy was cool AF. and watching this kind of tugged at the heart strings a bit.

3

u/RufiosBrotherKev Sep 29 '22

the chorus and harmonies you love were written by stevie

Tho coolios version is an improvement on the original imo

3

u/Illest7705 Sep 29 '22

He was having fun! Awesome to see this!

3

u/rackfocus Sep 29 '22

Wow. So happy I watched that. Super Coolio! Shout out to Guitar Man!

2

u/Open-Inside7200 Sep 29 '22

Would happily give both nuts to have been there for this, especially the guitarist

2

u/SuperLeafCruncher Sep 29 '22

At the very least, he lived past 24!

2

u/jinniu Sep 29 '22

I still know all the words to that song. RIP Coolio.

2

u/peleg1989 Sep 29 '22

Everything about this video is perfect minus the guitar guy fucking up the handshake at the end.
