Look at 0:02:08. This is the key shot. Pat Bev going back and to his left. Shot from the front and right. Totally inconsistent with a shot from the low post. Again, back, and left.
Back, and to the left.
Back, and to the left.

Everyone is joking about it but why is this not a thing? Hell even the fines they were dishing out like 7 or 8 years ago? Can someone honestly explain the reason to me? This is the most obvious no brainer for me and I have no idea why there isn't some sort of actual punishment. It's embarrassing for everyone and gives the league a bad reputation
96
u/IdreamofFiji 10d ago
The NHL has a penalty for embellishment and they get hit hard into the boards the whole game. Then again, they also only get a penalty for fighting so it's a very different sport.

It's the Lakers.
Edit: And if you can't unjustly enforce rules, what's the point of being the adjudicater of the rules in the first place?
Second edit: Tim Donaghy was a scapegoat, and the league is scared of the refs.

u/Poincare_Confection 10d ago
I really don't understand how you all watch the NBA. I love the sport of basketball, but the unpunished flopping is awful. And even worse is how people get called for a foul every time someone drives on them in the paint even if the person is just standing still with arms up holding a position.
It feels like someone is shooting free throws every 30 seconds and I only agree with half the calls. It's impossible for me to watch. Let the fuckers play.
24
u/possiblynotanexpert Trail Blazers 10d ago
Now add in the lack of traveling calls for star players and you’re right. I question why I watch it as well.

I've been saying this for over a fucking decade now. They started with that horseshit "3 warnings is a suspension" rule, suspended 2 people, and then stopped. 1 flop = 1 game suspension. It's super simple.
Flopping is so effective in the league that it started to seep into the defensive end of the game like 5 years ago. The league just doesn't care.

u/goes231even Suns 10d ago
Flopping is so effective in the league that it started to seep into the defensive end of the game like 5 years ago. The league just doesn't care.
The whole league is rife with rule abuse that has just become a part of playing "winning basketball" - flops of all sorts, notably the "throw head back" one, rip throughs (disregard flair), moving screens, jumping into players already in the air to draw fouls, offensive players hooking defenders arms into them to draw fouls, etc.
If they started actually calling manipulation fouls and flops in the game as a tech (and make a max of 3/season and then start suspending) instead of these piddly fines they never hand out anyway, the game would be so much better.

He was a -15 today, he's pretty much always a negative. I'm fine with suspending him for the rest of the season just to make an example to the rest of the league.

u/foye2smith 10d ago
Maybe in the next CBA. The NBA tried a system that eventually led to increasing fines and finally a suspension, but they did it without it being collectively bargained.
There'd be 3-4 flop warnings a week with a video link to publicly shame the offending player posted on NBA.com's news/announcements. There was never some huge outcry from the players, but behind the scenes the union must have fought it and won. It quietly went away and now maybe we hear about a half dozen instances throughout the entire year.

Ah yes, when Harden would just take his off hand (no ball/dribble) and swipe up when someone was playing very standard defense on him and still get a shooting foul call. They allowed that for far too long.
