James Gunn Writing New ‘Superman’ Film; Henry Cavill Will Not Return News

This comment has been edited, and the account purged, in protest to Reddit's API policy changes, and the awful response from Reddit management to valid concerns from the communities of developers, people with disabilities, and moderators. The fact that Reddit decided to implement these changes in the first place, without thinking of how it would negatively affect these communities, which provide a lot of value to Reddit, is even more worrying.
If this is the direction Reddit is going, I want no part of this. Reddit has decided to put business interests ahead of community interests, and has been belligerent, dismissive, and tried to gaslight the community in the process.
If you'd like to try alternative platforms, with a much lower risk of corporate interference, try federated alternatives like Kbin or Lemmy: r/RedditAlternatives

I mean it also makes some sense - if they want to reset the entire shebang, you want someone who can keep that physicality and look in ten years time and maybe fifteen.
I think he would have a great superman if they had used him well.

Gunn seems pretty smart about his comment and future collaborations note. They could easily use Henrys superman in the future for Crisis on Infinite Earth's or something. I bet that will be one of the big movies Gunn will try to get too.
Edit: this gained way more traction than I thought it would. I was just pointing out Gunn's comment. I don't care about the DCU.

Yeah at least from a fan viewpoint, Henry is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood at the moment. Great actor, great looks, someone who really understands what makes the stories compelling, and in general a pretty decent cool guy. For any studio who wants to establish a big franchise there's hardly a better leading man available

Yeah implying they’d work together is odd. They aren’t going to bring the person who played Superman in to play someone else, and they aren’t going to cast a new Superman and then later swap back to the old one.
Probably just a vague promise to make things feel nicer, like two people who vaguely know each other saying “we should get a drink together sometime” without ever talking about specifics since they both know that drink will never happen.

Gunn and Cavill both confirmed the news.
Gunn:
Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.
Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.
Cavill:
I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish. them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.
For those who have been by my side through the years…we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember. Superman is still around, everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets are for sure still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.

Except in The Batman he's still pretty new to being Batman and is still figuring out his vigilante persona. He's already the Batman but he's arguably not quite yet the Dark Knight.
That's probably how they are going to approach Superman. He's fresh to being Superman but I doubt it's going to be his origin story.

Or martian manhunter at the end of justice legue
349
u/pcharger Dec 15 '22
To be fair, Martian Manhunter was a last minute addition. The original scene was the introduction of Green Lantern.
Snyder had already shot the Affleck footage with a green light showing on him but had yet to film the Green Lantern segment of the dialogue. DC execs gave a hard, "NO." He was still hoping to put Green Lantern in with the Snyder Cut but they again said, "NO" after he filmed a scene in his own driveway with an actor standing in for Green Lantern: This was supposed to be Green Lantern
So with the Snyder Cut, he reshot the Affleck portion of the dialogue to get rid of the green light shining on him, and digitally inserted Martian Manhunter into the scene. This is why Affleck appears much less "swole" in that scene compared to others, it was a reshoot that took place 4 years after the original movie "wrapped".
Here is a link from the pre-vis footage, which clearly shows John Stewart's Green Lantern in the scene and not Martian Manhunter: Green Lantern Snyder Cut pre-vis

It feels wrong that Cavill was never given another chance playing as Superman. Man of Steel was fine, but it lacked the warmth and humanity we expect of the character. A sequel would have allowed him to fit into the role and give us a proper Superman film after he had become an established hero. The decision to kill his character in BvS was the biggest mistake the DCEU made because it severely undermined his character arc, forcing us to wait for another film for him to be resurrected.

Cavill has so much promise as Superman, but the movies didn't really do it justice. Too much destruction and not enough heart. Was hoping that maybe he'd either get another chance in another movie or at least a reboot without recasting him.

They’ll get Thimothe Chalamet to bulk up for a young Superman won’t they.

He did an interview few months back and said that Dicaprio told him to stay away from superhero movies.

I thought Chalamet sold his soul to the devil in return for the power to pick the right roles. Turns out hes just been getting advice from DiCaprio.

I doubt we'll see Cavill play another role in Gunn's universe. That announcement feels almost like a consolation prize to make things easier to process. Kind of like when Batgirl got cancelled and the press release said that the studio absolutely still wanted to work with the filmmakers and the star again.
Really disappointed to be honest. Cavill has never gotten his fair shake and without him I'm not interested in another Superman. I hope Cavill finds a great role with a studio that treats him with respect.
Good luck to James Gunn. But I'm finally tapping out of DC movies.

He was in the running for Casino Royale but he was just too young at the time.
