Jerry Springer, Tabloid Talk Show Provocateur & 'Ringmaster' Star, Dead at 79 News

My one anecdote about Springer is that I worked for the show briefly as a freelancer.
I remember my boss telling me he could tell the real from the fake guest because the actors would come dressed appropriately. The real people would usually get something to wear from wardrobe, and after many years he would see the same outfits repeated over and over again. You'd have 1 or 2 segments of "real people" per show, and they'd fill the rest with actors that had similar stories that fit the theme of the episode with the real people

u/Greg-Grant Apr 27 '23 edited Apr 27 '23
A pro-wrestler who worked Jerry's segments complimented the production team on protecting Jerry from the fake/real stuff by keeping him away from it and making sure to tell the actors that "Jerry doesn't know" and insisting some of the people were real. As in, they kept the kayfabe alive, to give Jerry "credibility." As carny wrestler, he was impressed by the dedication.
EDIT: to clarify, it was implied: Jerry knew some of the guests were fake, but not which ones; and this was the message communicated to the fake guests.

I'll never forget:
I live in a suburb of Chicago and had to make a quick trip to the Walgreens down my street one night.
I was in a hurry, grabbed my items, waited in line at checkout, and when it was finally my turn to checkout, I realized I forgot my wallet in my car. Shit.
"Hold my items, I'll be right back".
I RAN out the store, but there was a crowd of people standing in the doorway.
What the hell? Move, people! Of all the places, don't block the door!
I pushed my way through, realized they were fuckin' taking selfies with someone... ugh... so annoying... so I put my hand on someone's shoulder and physically pushed them aside so I can hurry through.
Got my wallet, finished my checkout, and only then did I realize...
People were taking selfies with Jerry Springer.
Google said he was born in my town and still had family there? It was Christmas time, so maybe he was in town visiting family...
So, yeah, I can say I pushed Jerry Springer.
EDIT:
Born in London, lived in Evanston, Illinois, which is where I saw him.
https://jwcdaily.com/evanstonmagazine/2016/08/11/the-king-of-controversy/
I found my original post in 2017, so...
... I pushed him back in 2017. No, I didn't kill Jerry Springer.

I was hired at a large manufacturing company that had very low morale. After being there a few months, I asked around why there was so much hostility towards the managers and supervisors and found out that it was because they banned watching Jerry Springer in the break room because people were coming back late from lunch.
192
u/jwillgoesfast Apr 27 '23
The big brain move there would be to have someone record it, then play it over lunch break skipping commercials. Now everyone is happy and lunch break only lasts 45 mins. Win win haha

u/BURNER12345678998764 Apr 27 '23
Except now they're all amped up and pissed from a stronger than normal dose of trash tv, this is a similar move from banning hate radio from construction sites, it keeps everyone more agreeable and friendly when they aren't constantly exposed to that awful shit.

Watching Austin Powers as an adult is incredible. I realize now that when I originally watched the movies when I was probably 12/13 I understood maybe 50% of the jokes.
I watched them a few years ago as an adult and it was like watching entirely new movies. They are absolutely packed with jokes I never understood before lol

Beavis & Butt-Head is the absolute best show to return to as an adult for this reason. I laughed when I was a kid because they hurt themselves a lot, but as an adult the jokes hit so much harder. I've been in tears whenever I have time to sit down and watch them. The new episodes are also top tier.

u/GalacticDystopia Apr 27 '23
I've been nothing short of amazed at how masterful Mike Judge is as both a writer and performer.
In 30 years, he hasn't lost it one bit, and somehow managed to take a quintessential 90s TV show and modernize it in a way that is still relevant and hilarious.
The new Beavis and Butt-Head is a masterclass in how to properly revive a show

Dana Carvey is one of those guys that was so hilarious in the early 90s and you would have thought he would have gone on to have a great career. It seems like a few bad choices ruined his chances, or maybe he just ran out of steam and then gave us Master of Disguise :/
He's still funny in interviews, his Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend is riotous, and he seems to be in good spirits about everything, but I just wish he'd had a better shot after SNL.
44
u/Dan_Berg Apr 27 '23
There is a documentary called Too Funny to Fail, I think it's still on Hulu, that's about his sketch show he started after he left SNL. A lot of the humour went miles above most Prime time viewers' heads but now is seen as way too far ahead of the curve. The show also introduced a bunch of now-superstars like Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert.
37
u/puckit Apr 27 '23

I can't believe I've never seen this!
Austin Powers holds a special place in my heart because I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I have in a theatre. The only reason a buddy and I went to watch it was because tickets to Liar Liar were sold out and we were already at the theatres and decided to check it out. I don't remember there being much marketing for it at the time so it was just a shot in the dark for us. Best choice ever!

Besides being hilarious and filled with so many timeless one liners, these movies were actually tasteful. There’s so much over the top humor going on and all of it seems to have a place and even continue to catch you off guard.
Mike Meyers added so much to American comedy culture and I don’t think we even realize it.

Also, they won the gold star of satire by forcing the James Bond franchise to pivot to being gritty and dark rather than the camp of the Brosnan era. Daniel Craig mentioned in an interview that Austin Powers parodied them so well that they felt they needed to change.

That is unfortunate, because I find the Craig bonds to be ridiculously heavy (except Casino Royale).
Brosnan Bond movies were fun and casual to watch. Craig Bond movies involved testicle torture. And the last one did not even make sense to me.

The Ana de Armas part in the latest Craig Bond was really entertaining. It had a lot of old-school Bond elements... action & stunts, a mission playing out, Bond and a beautiful woman, playful, etc. It elevated the movie around it a little bit.

It still upended his political career. Years ago I heard a Democratic Party operative saying that Springer was more charismatic politician than even Bill Clinton and that while the “Check to the Hooker” didn’t kill his career in Cincinnati, it killed it in Ohio politics and nationally. He had no place to go after Cincinnati, so went into TV instead. This operative said he could’ve been President but for his vices.
That said, those sins clearly wouldn’t stop him in todays environment.

I only discovered recently that Jerry was technically British. He was born in a London Underground station that was being used as an air-raid shelter during the Blitz.
Highgate station, to be precise. Near where l myself was born in London. I used to use it every day.

Edit: During German bombing in 1944, but not actually during the Blitz, as a commenter has pointed out. TIL.

He came from a prominent Jewish family from Landsberg an der Warthe (now Gorzów, Poland). His great uncle, Hermann Elkeles, was a well-known doctor from Berlin.

I was an audience member on the Jerry Springer show when I was 19, so over 20 years ago. I actually got the mic from Jerry in the Q&A session and I ended up talking shit to the guy on stage who was cheating on his wife with a family member.
The guy ended up coming off the stage wanting to fight me, I jumped out of my seat to confront him, and then Steve ended up holding him back and the other burly security guard ended up holding me back. We yelled at each other in the aisle and it was amazing.
The show didn’t air until 8 months later and all of a sudden all my friends started to call my house phone screaming OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE YOU WERE ON SPRINGER!!
Another fun tidbit, before the show starts, Jerry takes questions from the audience before they start filming. Someone asked him ‘where do you find the people to be on the show?’
And he quickly replied with ‘I don’t know, where do you live?’ Haha it was such a great and fun experience!

I know the majority of his career was trash TV, but one episode I still remember clearly even though I hadn't seen it in decades, was the one with Sandy Allen.
She was the tallest woman at the time in the world and also on the show was a little girl with progeria. If you have never heard of progeria look it up, it's a terrible disease that causes premature aging and most children with it don't live to see adulthood. Sandy gave the little girl a book about how it was okay to be different.
It really shined a light on two people who were largely marginalized from society.

I recommend people listen to the segment This American Life did on him. He was an interesting man.

I love how he resigned from the city council after the prostitute thing, got back the seat because he was honest, then got elected as mayor afterwards lol
He was actually a pretty good dude, too

I don't know enough about the man to defend his character, but his show kinda had a significant positive influence on my life. I used to secretly watch it in my grandparents house and would judge the guests all through the show. I would sit and wait for his final thoughts always thinking that today would be the day he would condemn them for whatever outrageous things they had done, but he never did. His final thoughts were always positive, introspective, and never poked fun or made light of any of the issues they were having. I like to think that influenced me to be less judgmental and to realize how easy it is to write people off for no good reason.

I mean, except for the fact that the entire show was there specifically so that people could watch and judge.
Some positive comments at the end in no way change the fact that his show is pure outrage porn, and specifically sought out the trashiest people to put them on display.

His show reminds me what has become the bitesized outrage porn that is tiktok, facebook and /r/all
Enough details to make you feel informed enough to justify what you think but with no greater context presented/available so you don't get a sense of the situation.
Something you immediately consume, feel something(usually anger) then move onto the next show with no real growth as a person. Only difference is Jerry had to fill a whole hour with it. Today, you only need 30-40s.

I got to meet him about 25 years ago. My friend said to him, "your show kicks Oprah's ass!" He just laughed.

I had a classmate from France and she said Canada wasn't what she was expecting. I asked her what she was expecting and she said "You know the Jerry Springer show? Like that".

A girl in my HS went on the show when she was 18. I remember her coming back to school with a black eye and running up to her asking what happened and she said she was on Jerry Springer. It was all fake except for the fighting. Her story was that she was the babysitter fucking the dad and the mom finds out.
I didn't go to my senior prom and hung out in school for the day because we had to - that was the day Leah's Jerry Springer aired so we all watched it in class haha
It was wild haha

Met him twice as a kid. Once was at a political rally near my hometown (early 2000’s, I believe in support of a gubernatorial candidate), and the other was a few years later while dropping off a family friend at the airport. The first time, he took the time to take a photo with me and talk about what I was interested in doing with my future (I surely said some nonsense about being a famous musician or something of the sort). He gave me some words of encouragement and told me that no matter what path I take in life that I’d find success by being true to myself. The second time, we saw him in the airport terminal and approached him. He remembered my name, asked me how I was doing in school, and reiterated to me that no matter what path I take in life that I’d find success by being true to myself. Talk show sensationalism aside, he seemed like a genuinely kind hearted person.
