I am re-watching the Wire now…he was definitely one of my favourite parts of the show. Too young to go at 60.

RIP

Same.

He is one of the characters I relate the most to. Someone I can be similar to, but also aspiring to be.

"Couple weeks from now, you're gonna be in some district somewhere with 11 or 12 uniforms looking to you for everything. And some of them are gonna be good police. Some of them are gonna be young and stupid. A few are gonna be pieces of shit. But all of them will take their cue from you.

You show loyalty, they learn loyalty. You show them it's about the work, it'll be about the work. You show them some other kinda game, then that's the game they'll play.

I came on in the Eastern, and there was a piece-of-shit lieutenant hoping to be a captain, piece-of-shit sergeants hoping to be lieutenants. Pretty soon we had piece-of-shit patrolmen trying to figure the job for themselves. And some of what happens then is hard as hell to live down. Comes a day you're gonna have to decide whether it's about you or about the work."

I just haven't seen any character describing leadership in such a distinct way.

The look on his face when Prez punches Valchek never gets old.

72

u/frankyseven Mar 17 '23

The thing is that Daniels loved having Prez around, because Prez was a great detective as long as he wasn't in the field. Sure, Prez is a screw up who only made detective because of Valchek but once he found out what he was good at he was really fucking good at it. Valchek just viewed Prez as a screw up that married his daughter but Daniels viewed him for what he was as a great detective.

Damn. He's been a commanding officer in so many of my favorite shows. Fringe, The Wire, and Bosch. It's painful to hear he's passed.

He’s also a HUGE voice actor

edit: some highlights - Destiny 1&2, Vox Machina, Rick and Morty, Avengers: EMH, Ducktales, Beware the Batman, Payday 2, Horizon Zero Dawn and the list goes on…

There’s no voice quite like his…

THAT'S where I know his voice from, I already knew him from his live-action roles, but just now I could swear I heard him somewhere too

He has one of those iconic, commanding, one-of-a-kind voices, and he'll be missed

416

u/UCanJustBuyLabCoats Mar 17 '23

This is just like when Carrie Fisher passed away right after a story point where her character could have died but didn’t. Sylens almost left but didn’t, and now he can’t be in the third game

He WAS Destiny. He played it regularly and loved his fandom. I’m absolute gutted

387

u/about_60_Hobos Mar 17 '23

Yeah I’ve been playing Destiny since the beta and he’s absolutely iconic. He was the last remaining of the first set of voice actors in early Destiny that were media celebrities (Nathan Fillion, Peter Dinklage) that is still in the game.

Every Destiny player knows his most iconic lines by heart.

And while not to make light of his passing, despite so many other great roles, my all time favorite moment of his remains this:

(I think he's the only person to surprise Eric at his own game with the desk punch)

Always worth linking the follow up as well:

According to TMZ, their LEO sources said it appeared to be natural causes - not suicide. This also seemed to be completely unexpected, as he was seemingly signed on to do additional John Wick films?

6.0k

u/SmoothCriminalJM Mar 17 '23 edited Mar 17 '23

He pulled out of the John Wick 4 premiere a few days ago. It sounds like he wasn’t feeling well.

Edit: The premiere was on Wednesday. He was meant to show up but didn’t. No explanation was given.

7.0k

u/shahooster Mar 17 '23 edited Mar 17 '23

Just a bit of a PSA for anyone in the same boat. Don’t know what happened with Lance, obviously, but this is eerily similar to a 37 year old friend of mine who “wasn’t feeling well” for about three weeks. He was having a heart attack and didn’t know it. Would’ve likely survived had he sought medical attention.

e: Symptoms were indigestion/heartburn and low energy, IIRC. But more importantly, don’t brush this stuff off. See a doc.

1.3k

u/nickfitz79 Mar 17 '23

My best friend died at 28 unexpectedly from heart failure after a week of flu symptoms. December 2020, tested negative for Covid so the hospital told him to just go home and rest. Then he never woke up.

257

u/Borscht_ Mar 17 '23

I also had flu-like symptoms at 24. I went to the ER, and luckily the doctor on duty decided that I should stay there overnight. Lo and behold, that night I went into a cardiac arrest and then awakened by a defibrillator. Super lucky to still be alive.

This is not the comment I want to read after 5 days of flu symptoms lol.

348

Yeah few comments up some doctor's like "watch out for these symptoms" and I'm thinking that's pretty much me every other week when my daughter brings home another strain of RSV or the flu.

u/Jojje22 Mar 18 '23

Best thing is to disregard it, it's just bringing unnecessary anxiety about an extremely uncommon scenario for anyone with normal health.

Always thought it was an almost instantaneous event.

Doc here. Not always, especially as you age. Women are also more likely to present with atypical symptoms. Everyone should know about “anginal equivalents”

1.2k

u/neolologist Mar 17 '23

If it's low energy and heartburn the problem is I've been dying for about 10 years.

You'd be surprised by how "normal" people just go through stuff. My grandfather had a stroke and still managed to drive around town to do some shopping and then came up to my parent's house to visit. Only reason we were able to tell him to stay is because my dad wasn't home yet, but it was fairly obvious he had a stroke (one side of his face was droopy and he had slurred speech because of it). Sometimes it's just "wasn't feeling well" and other times it's literally dead in a few minutes.

Myocardial infarction which is more commonly known as having a heart attack is when a blood vessel is blocked causing tissue of the heart to slowly deoxygenate and die. It is a reasonably slow process and is generally treatable if you seek help early enough. Symptoms can include a sudden pain in the chest radiating into the arm but they can definitely be more subtle than that.

He had so many shows both live action and animated that he should have been part of their upcoming seasons, he's been really busy over the last 5 years in both TV and movies, what a terrible loss, Reddick was a fantastic actor that always brought his presence to whatever he was doing.

387

u/thorpie88 Mar 17 '23

Destiny is a year away from wrapping up it's ten year story and he'd been the voice of one of the most important characters throughout it

100

u/jreacher455 Mar 17 '23

I loved his line in one of the later seasons while talking to Bosch: Motherfucker, get out!

151

u/Kaldricus Mar 17 '23

His combination of disdain and admiration for Bosch was balanced so well. Both actors knew how to show that their characters knew how to play "the games" of what they were involved with. I don't want to say Bosch is underrated, but I do think it flew under the radar for a lot of people as just another police procedural. Genuinely one of my favorite shows of the past 10 years or so.

33

u/salty_john Mar 17 '23

One of my favorite shows too. I've rewatched it a few times already.

60

u/Kaldricus Mar 17 '23

My favorite part of Bosch is how it almost uses LA as a character. Each season has a different feel to it because it utilizes a different part of the city.

Absolutely.

Or put it next to the Cayde statue they just put up.

I kinda hope they don't recast him. Do the Black Panther route and make it canon

169

u/OomPapaMeowMeow Mar 17 '23

There are other characters that could be (and have been) recast that wouldn't / didn't phase me one bit. But Commander Zavala? I just can't imagine anyone other than Lance. Especially with how much he apparently loved the Destiny universe and the community (even tho we don't always deserve it). I'm usually in the recast camp. Not for this one though.

53

u/ItalianDragon Mar 17 '23

Given how the Witness has arrived in the solar system and is flipping stuff here and there, it might be possible to write Zavala as one of the guardiana who die at his hand since in the intro video he effortlessly chops to bits several guardians and their ghosts.

Completely unexpected and shocking! I'll always remember him for his role as Broyles in Fringe. RIP.

Right in the middle of my first rewatch of Fringe since it came out. Love it even more than the first time! So sad to see this news.

Rest in peace Thordak. You did the character justice. You are terrifying

u/sappyguy Mar 17 '23 edited Mar 17 '23

I was pleasantly surprised he was even doing voice acting roles.

ETA: looking at his IMDB now, I’m even more surprised at just how many voice roles he was involved in.

u/backwoodsofcanada Mar 17 '23

Dudes voice is amazing, I'm so disappointed that he didn't get to do more voice work.

Vox Machinima’s initial pacing and tone for me was pretty good, but bringing Lance Reddick in for Thordak was such a good ass choice you could completely swap from gag scene to Thordak in a heartbeat and the tonal shift was seamless.

This feels almost as unexpected as when Chadwick Boseman died, just totally out of nowhere. Dude seemed like he was in great shape.

I had a relative in her early 60s just die of heart failure one day. She exercised in some capacity every day all her life. She started feeling under the weather on a Friday, thought she was getting better and died on Monday morning. Sometimes you just get the short stick genetically.

My grandpa died from an aortic aneurysm and was the same. He’d been hit in the chest by a panel working cows and knocked to the ground. Got back up and seemed fine. But over the next few days, he told my grandma he wasn’t feeling well. Not super bad, just not feeling 100%. The morning he died, as he was walking out the door he told my grandma that he was starting to feel better and more like himself. He was also only 60.

Women especially (some men too) get "non-traditional" symptoms like indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting etc. So it doesnt feel like a heart attack, if thats what happened to her.

Seems like this was totally unexpected as he has a scheduled appearance to Kelly clarkson’s show. Probably an undiagnosed heart condition? Like he’s a ticking time bomb no one knew.

u/Rileyman360 Mar 17 '23

The guy looked completely in good health and everything. You can check his socials and I couldn't think of a single sign of something coming up. An absolute tragedy.

Even though he looks great, you never know what is going on inside a person's body. Perhaps, he had a bad heart, that sadly killed him.

He skipped out on the SXSW John Wick premiere without any stated reason - I wonder if he wasn't feeling well.

Here's my Lance Reddick story:

I'm in the board game industry and I'm constantly working various types of conventions. One time at Emerald City Comic Con, I made a point of getting away from my booth to meet Lance.

I was first in line and weirdly I was nervous to meet him which is strange since I commonly meet a lot of industry people. Anyway, he shows up and I say "You are the coolest fucking actor ever" then I felt dumb for saying Fuck and apologized.

But he brought himself right down to my level and very nicely said that he just geeked out over meeting Michael Biehn (who was also at that con).

Amidst all these Lance Reddick articles, I was THIS article: https://twitter.com/JimJarmuschHair/status/1636818774279213057 which shows him having a similar geek experience over Keanu Reeve's girlfriend and also using something to the effect of "Cool as fuck" so that made me better after all these years too.

Anyway, in board games I'm knowning for being the designer of the Drinking Quest series and he signed this for me and it's just been the greatest: https://twitter.com/DrinkingQuest/status/1156257059744227328

This was nine years ago and I was still fairly new to game design and publishing at the time so to get a boost like this early one was really nice to have.

TL;DR I awkwardly geeked out, Lance was a gentleman about it

Man, I've always love Mr Reddick. Whether in Fringe or Bosch or anything, he was noticeable.

This is not the news I was looking for this morning.

I literally just finished Horizon: Zero Dawn for the first time the other day so I’m actually kinda rattled. My first memory of him is the small role he had in Lost!

RIP.

God with John Wick Chapter 4 releasing next week, its gonna be very bittersweet to see it now.

u/dk240996 Mar 17 '23

I wonder if Lionsgate would be able to add a tribute onto the film either in end credits or the intro credit sequence in time for the cinema release.

96

u/TheMelv Mar 17 '23

It's definitely possible, especially since most movie theaters are all digital now.

This fucking blows. I watched Corporate a month or so ago for the first time and I was so surprised at how funny he was. You're used to seeing him playing intimidating or secretive roles but he was so fucking funny in that it made me appreciate him from an entirely new angle.

He rocked in everything, RIP to a great one

60

u/wakejedi Mar 17 '23

He killed it an a IASIP episode. Prob one of the funniest of the entire show, but that's another thread....RIP

This death makes no sense to me. He seemed so crazy young and healthy.

What the fuck

82

u/Fellatination Mar 17 '23

Don't forget Fringe!

This dude is in so many of my favorite shows. The entertainment world has lost one of it's best character actors. Lance had some of the most awesome stoic screen presence I've ever seen.

Rest well, Mr. Reddick. You'll be remembered fondly by many.
