after 2.5 years, I've completed collecting 80% of f1 world champions' cars. all are 1:43 in scale. Misc

championship winning drivers cars from 1950 to 2022. missing a few. the last two rows are just some other cars I've collected.

where w11?
72
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
W11 is quite hard to get.. most that are up for sale is quite expensive, so wanted to buy the ones which are easily available first . I'll be getting that soon

u/Acrobatic-Tomato-532 Ferrari Nov 23 '22
I recommend the Spark one with the pit boards if you can find it. Amazing model.

u/AggrOHMYGOD Nov 23 '22
Some are just so much money
Like the 07 mclarens I found were all like $70+ :(
8
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
You are right. The ones I have pending now are like 80 $ and some go upto 150 as the starting price unfortunately. So, despite having only 10 more cars to collect, it's gonna take a while to do so.

What did this cost you. Because i think i just found a new hobby. 😵
7
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
It's very expensive, I didn't track lol. But taking my time though. This is around 2.5 years in the making and I might take a year more to complete it.

u/diplodocus91 Formula 1 Nov 25 '22
I searched for it. Could find 1:18 models. They cost a staggering 83k indian rupees. That’s almost my monthly salary. 😢
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 25 '22
I haven't gone for 1:18 mainly because if it's cost. This one you can get from as low as 1.2k to around 10k INR at the highest.

u/Mista_Dou Nov 23 '22
Man good to see that you have the fangio's championship cars. I also love that bt44, sadly it's not the #7!
5
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
A Reutemann fan i see. The BT44 was given to me by a friend because he had lost the driver's head which came in that car and it was looking bad. I had to dismatle the whole thing to remove the rest of the driver figure out , reattach teh steering wheel correctly and put it up all back again. That was a fun exercise though!
2
u/Mista_Dou Nov 24 '22
Not much of a Reut fan, but i did like him, seen archived stuff he seemed to have a lot of talent and his numbers where quite good. Good thing you like to take care of your collection pieces, i would place the bt44 alongside the other Murray's designs.

Awesome collection. Can I ask where did you get these from?
7
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
Lots of different places from friends, Facebook groups, and ebay.
2
u/nahnonameman HAM MSC LAU Nov 23 '22
Oh alright. The only place I know is minichamps I don’t know anywhere else
3
u/IncognitoGinge Nov 23 '22
which is your favourite? is that just because of its detail? or your favourite team?
i’ve always wondered if the steering racks work on these? or anything is functional?
3
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
I have a few cars that I like a lot. But it's mainly because it's from the team I support or the driver I really like.
The scale I collect, only the wheels turn, nothing else is functional at all.
One can fall in love with all the cars if you go by detail. Think about it, each car has won the championship and some have become the base to win many championships, so the details on each one of them are just very impressive.
3
u/Kuningas_Arthur Mika Häkkinen Nov 23 '22
Love your collection, but the fact that you haven't left gaps for the missing ones bugs me way too much lol
3
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
Lol, i can understand. I did try to leave gaps for the ones that aren't there and My OCD went crazy looking at the gaps, so, no gaps for now, lol!

u/hickom14 Max Verstappen Nov 24 '22
What's a comparison to a normal object so I can grasp the size of these models?
2
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
i am not sure what normal object can be used, but here's the average dimensions: length 5 to 7 inches, width 2 to 3 inches and about 2 to 3 inches in height.

u/Maedhral Riccardo Patrese Nov 23 '22
Fantastic collection. Are you going to get both for seasons where there were 2, I.e a Lotus 79 as well as the 78 for 1978?
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
Thanks! and sorry, I didn;t understand your question?
2
u/Maedhral Riccardo Patrese Nov 23 '22
In some years the winning driver used 2 different cars, so in 1978 Andretti drove both the lotus 78 and 79, in 1970 Rindt used the Lotus 49 and 72. I was wondering if you were going for an example of each, or how you would decide which was the right one?
3
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
Ah okay, I understand it now. So, i already had one issue where in the past ,drivers changed number multiple times in the same season. So, i decided that I would chose 1 car with any of their numbers from their championship year that they drove. I wasn't aware of multiple cars itself but i think my thinking would be the same. Either of the cars from that year is okay with me but I will stick with only 1 car for a given year and the car ( and number) should be driven by the WDC for that year

2
u/f1endingforf1 Nov 23 '22
How much do each of those cost, on average?
4
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
It varies a lot. The cheapest I have was around 15 usd while the most expensive one is around d 60 usd. You can't really set an average as it's not the right measure for this collection.

Good choice on scale. I like my 1/18 collection but sometimes wish I'd gone for something easier to display/store.
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 25 '22
I saw the 1/18s. Only the newer ones I felt were amazing to look at.. but older ones weren't made well. Fortunately that's changing now. despite that , the cost and display were two other issues for me. 1/43 checked all boxes of display size, cost, and general availability.
3
u/Toliver182 Nov 23 '22
What order are they in?
9
u/LandArch_0 Juan Manuel Fangio Nov 23 '22
I'd say they are from newer to older (top to bottom), except the two lower rows
15
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22 edited Nov 23 '22
Yes you are right. Top to bottom 2022 to 1950 and last two rows are just random cars that I got coz I liked them.
5
u/LandArch_0 Juan Manuel Fangio Nov 23 '22
Awesome collection OP! Which are you missing and which are your favs?
5
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
I'm missing around 10 cars now from various eras. Like 2012 vettel, 2020 Hamilton, etc..
I have many favorites actually eith different eeasons to why i like them , so its hard to tell , but :I have two favorites: 1. 1999 mclaren mp4/14 Mika Hakinnen 2. 2021 RB16B max verstappen
Both cars are my favorite mainly because I just love those drivers.
But there are some others too.

Wow. I'm not jealous at aaaallll. ;)
That is awesome.
My OCD is really struggling with the reverse order, though. ;)
6
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
I connect with the newer cars more and that's the only reason I have out it in this order
2
u/Tom_Ace1 Formula 1 Nov 23 '22
But then they are facing the wrong way. ;)
(Don't worry about it, that's just me. Have them any way you like.)
I would leave open the spaces for cars that are missing, I think. That way it is more satisfying as you complete your collection. :)
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 23 '22
I agree, and I tried it. The gaps messed with the type of OCD I have lol.. so closed it.

see, now if you arranged them from oldest to newest starting from the top, you wouldn't have to re-arrange your whole display every year, you could just add the newest car at the end.
2
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
Yes, I have thought about that, but the thing is i coneect with the newer generation of the cars more than the old ones. I have seen them so much racing and I know so much about them. So, i wanted to have focus on the newer cars first. Also, to me i look forward to working on the display ( cleaning it, re-aaranging it, upgrading things too) so, i will be keeping it this way.

Dude, omg. The 98 and 99 McLarens! Where did you find them?
2
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
i got them from a facebook group. As a Mika fan, these are one of the early ones that I tried to get. It was hard to get but worth the effort. It's available on ebay as well but quite pricy the last time i checked it.

u/limeybastard Nov 24 '22 edited Nov 24 '22
The ones I see missing are the Cooper T51 and T53 (Brabham, 1959 and 1960), Lotus 25/33 (Clark, 1965), Brabham BT19/BT20 (Brabham, 1966), FW08 (Roseburg, 1982), McLaren MP4/5 (Prost, 1989), F2004 (Schumacher, 2004), Renault R26 (Alonso, 2006), Red Bull RB6, 7, and 9 (Vettel, 2010, 2011, and 2013), and three of the modern Mercs (W11 and two others, they're hard to distinguish).
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
yup, you nailed it. 5 more cars ( f2004, RB7, Mp4/5, Cooper T51, and Lotus 25) are on the way. so hopefully will close this year with 85% of the collection complete.

What are the dimensions of the newer models? Hard to tell how big they are from the image and thinking about getting one.
1

It's 1:43 scale and these are not very big. pretty small. length around 3 to 5 inches and width around 2 to 3 inches and hieght around 1.5 to 2 inches

1
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
Thank you so much. If you make it a slow process, I'm sure both of you will have an amazing time building this collection. But yeah once you're in it.. it's way too addictive lol .

u/TheGreatCherryPopper Nov 24 '22
So, which one do you miss ? The RB and a couple of Mercs ?
2
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
Apart from the RB and couple of mercs, I also miss Keke rosberg 1982 car, the car from 1960 and 1966 as well .around 10 cars in total pending as of now.

This is great, I’ve been building a collection myself. https://imgur.com/a/v7pmz0y/
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
Oh wow, that's awesome... I will highly recommend getting a display case for your collection. It would look awesome with all the bulls and ferraris together
1
u/PotterOneHalf Jordan Nov 24 '22
But then they wouldn’t fit all around my workstation at my job. It would be nice though because the tyres get rather dusty.
1
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
Ah okay. But yeah be careful of the dust. They start entering at the corners of decals and they start peeling and the adhesive goes. And they also tend to stain sometimes on light colored paints..
1
u/PotterOneHalf Jordan Nov 24 '22
Whoa, didn’t know that. Thanks for the tips!
These are all burbango models I got for around 15 ish on average a piece, so I know they aren’t made as well.
2
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
I can show you Minichamps as well with same problem , lol .. it's not because it's bburago, its all about maintining it well as its a show piece. And decals issue is not something that happens soon either. It happens over many many years.
1
u/PotterOneHalf Jordan Nov 24 '22
Phew, that makes me feel better. I’d love to get some mini champ or Spark ones, but they’re just so much more expensive. It’s wild how there isn’t a mid tier one between them.
2
u/sourcedexter Nov 24 '22
So, bburago, altaya, ixo, atlas collections belong to lower to mid but some of their cars are as good as the Minichamps as well. I have heard that spark is much better but they are priced much much higher too.
1
u/Stevieloot11 Formula 1 25d ago
Hi, Amazing to see your doing this, how are you getting on with it?
I too did the same around 10 years ago collection panini to begin with and realised I could complete all the world champs. I soon realised I would have to buy some of the more expensive models like minichamps etc to fill the gaps and I've since been upgrading all my models to minichamps spark ever since.
Also I have upgraded the decals to the tobacco versions and managed to have them on the same stands so that they all look perfect. Its also really fun adding the new model every season.
I've attached some photos below although I am new to reddit so still learning how to post correctly.
1
u/sourcedexter 24d ago
Your collection looks amazing as well... I have round 9 more to go. And the ones that are remaining are super expensive, so waiting for a good opportunity to buy them. And yeah. The tobacco company vars don't have the decals ... looks like I'll Have to do what you've done as well..
And what you have is 1:18?
1
u/Stevieloot11 Formula 1 24d ago
These are all 1:43, think I'd need a lottery win and a bigger house to do it in 1:18.
With the decals if your interested there is a guy on Ebay and Facebook that does them. They are called Grand Prix Decals.
I will keep an eye out for your updates on this and if you have any questions I will be happy to try and help.
Steve.
1
u/sourcedexter 24d ago
They look amazing, would have been able to tell that it's 1:43 . And yeah lol, lottery is needed to have a similar collection in 1:18... and yes.. hoping to finish my collection in a year's time!
And thanks, IL leach out for any questions!

Very very nice!
Which model makers do you recommend for 1:43 scale models? I've been considering getting winning cars from last few years (nothing to rival your collection!) but I don't know yet who it's best to buy from.
