Never realised how elevated that straight is compared to t1.

386

u/Piedro92 Fernando Alonso Jul 08 '22

It's honestly crazy. First time seeing it IRL and it blew my mind.

58

u/MMOsAreNotRPGs Jul 09 '22

Love it. F1 needs more gud climbs.

48

u/BigSlav667 Charles Leclerc Jul 09 '22

F1 needs to go back to Nurburgring, there's so many nice elevation changes there. And I'm not just talking about the Nordschleife

12

u/MMOsAreNotRPGs Jul 09 '22

They need F1 Nurburgring that goes 4 wide

20

u/TehAlpacalypse Sir Lewis Hamilton Jul 09 '22

Nurburgring yes. I’d love to see them there, it’s a great track. Nordschleife, idk if I wanna see a driver die on tv.

16

u/VerStannen Bernd Mayländer Jul 09 '22

From what I’ve heard, too many changes would need to be made in order to get the Nordschleife up to safety standards for f1. Like Bathurst, the changes would likely take the charm out of the track, and I personally would not want to see that done to such a legendary circuit.

As for now, they’re some great demo runs of F1 on the Nordschleife on YT, so that’s good enough for me to scratch my F1 on the ring itch.

8

u/BigSlav667 Charles Leclerc Jul 09 '22

Nordschleife should be reserved for GT racing and lower imo

3

u/miaomiaomiao Toro Rosso Jul 09 '22

... and better camera angles that do right to height differences.

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Wait is that T1 way in the background there?

Trying to get a feel where exactly the shot is

73

u/ti_picko_gegam Sergio Pérez Jul 08 '22

Yup, this shot i think is a few 40ish meters from T3.

30

u/Piedro92 Fernando Alonso Jul 08 '22

Seems about right. I found a hole in the fence where I could peek my camera through.

5

u/tacotruck88 Mark Webber Jul 09 '22

Now imagine they race this track in reverse

9

u/OilyBobbyFl4y Sergio Pérez Jul 09 '22

I was hoping they'd do this when they hosted double headers here.

12

u/FelsirNL Red Bull Jul 09 '22

They won’t because the fences and other safety structures are designed with one direction in mind. For example, openings in the barriers are in the direction that cars are pushed back not scoops to catch cars going off track by accident.

2

u/LandArch_0 Juan Manuel Fangio Jul 09 '22

I don't think it's going to be a fast race if they are going in reverse. Also, they need larger mirrors

2

u/2225ns Jul 09 '22

I seriously thought you had taken two pictures and photoshopped them together.

Great shot!

24

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Ahhhh got it now, thank you.

Wow what an elevation change

16

u/mattiejj Yuki Tsunoda Jul 08 '22

Yep. I think it's taken from the grassy hill next to the DRS straight after turn 3.

But /u/piedro92 can probably confirm if I'm correct.

7

u/Piedro92 Fernando Alonso Jul 08 '22

Definitely true! I was in front at the fence.

Wow, this is seriously amazing!

207

u/Ld511 Jul 08 '22

Beautiful track. These stretch of european races really show the beauty of motorsports, street races are fine occasionally but nothing beats a track like this or some of the others

57

u/Piedro92 Fernando Alonso Jul 08 '22

Yeah man. It was so much fun shooting with different elevation changes. You get some unique vistas at every corner.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Yeah it's funny that street races are actually trying for aesthetics, but the tracks just do it better, with ease. Red Bull ring has everything glorious about Austrian landscape, while also having a circuit that just feels suitably epic

3

u/cmd_iii Mario Andretti Jul 09 '22

“Yeah….We’re gonna just go ahead and ditch Road America for a street race in Chicago, anyway.”

—NASCAR, Believe It or Not!!

16

u/Gr1mmage Jul 09 '22

You mean you don't like generic tight twisty corners with no overtaking, leading into a long straight for DRS overtakes, with zero character and even less run off, possibly on actual streets, but just as likely to actually be a purpose built circuit that's labelled a street circuit so it has lower safety requirements. Also may or may not be anywhere near the actual city the race is named after

0

u/listyraesder Jul 09 '22

Races are named after countries not cities, except for the 2 spare yank ones.

14

u/Aflimacon Sergio Pérez Jul 09 '22

And Emilia Romagna, admittedly for the same reason.

1

u/listyraesder Jul 09 '22

That’s due to F1’s attempted extortion of San Marino not working out.

3

u/Gr1mmage Jul 09 '22

Officially maybe but I'd say that the majority are more commonly referred to be the name of the city or the circuit (which is often named after a nearby town/city) rather than the official title. Case in point with the person below mentioning Emilia Romagna, which basically never gets called that (or even by the course name Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari), it's just Imola 99% of the time

1

u/TheRealGooner24 Max Verstappen Jul 09 '22

Mexico City Grand Prix, Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Singapore (city-state) Grand Prix?

0

u/kai325d Sebastian Vettel Jul 09 '22

Abu Dhabi, it's still the Brazilian GP

2

u/TheRealGooner24 Max Verstappen Jul 09 '22

2

37

u/-apparition- Jul 08 '22

am i dumb? what is first corner on the top of the photo?

29

u/Piedro92 Fernando Alonso Jul 08 '22

T1 :). Elevation is confusing so no worries!

10

u/-apparition- Jul 08 '22

it feels like the turn is mirrored cause of the elevation. Looks like it turns from the grandstand side instead of the other

2

u/UPBenny223 Jul 09 '22

Its not T1. The corner you're reffering to is a chicane that was added last year between T1 and T2 for MotoGP because they were getting too fast up towards T3. The F1 layout is still the same tho.

2

u/OldWiseMann Jul 09 '22

No he means the bending barrier in the run off at turn 1. It bends to the right (because the run off is longer if you go straight on from the start finish straight. The bending of the barrier made him think turn 1 is mirrored with that barrier as the inside of a lefthander turn 1

That was Lidl's tie-in to the 2021 European football (soccer) championships. Actie means action in Dutch, but in commercial context is can also be used to indicate something's on sale/offered at a discount. The "actie!" On the shirts is done in the exact same font Lidl uses on the weekly discount/on sale price tags in their stores and in their flyers.

18

u/RAWRacing Formula 1 Jul 08 '22

Orange is the Dutch national color, sort of

19

u/MobiusF117 Formula 1 Jul 08 '22

Not sort of. It is the national colour indeed.

-3

u/Tabard18 Jul 08 '22

But they didn’t bother putting it on the flag

14

u/mattiejj Yuki Tsunoda Jul 08 '22

It was on our flag (that's why the New York flag is is orange-white-blue), but the French ruined it, and during the second world war it became a Nazi symbol so it's pretty controversial. Nowadays we use a orange pennant next to the flag.

Kinda sad because it was a baller flag.

8

u/MobiusF117 Formula 1 Jul 08 '22 edited Jul 08 '22

It used to be.

The old flag was orange, white and blue, also known as the "Prinsenvlag", but the current one was also used interchangeably.
After Napoleon's occupation of the Netherlands, the newly formed Kingdom decided to use the red, white and blue flag to appease people in opposition to the new monarchy, as the orange colour would be associated with the new king.
The king was part of the house of Orange-Nassau, an offshoot of the house of Orange that William of Orange (the founder of the country) was part of and the ultimate reason the colour is associated with national pride to this day.
As a compromise, an orange streamer is now flown over the flag for events involving the royal family, such as during King's day.

There have been movements in the past to reinstate the old flag, one of them being through the efforts of the NSB (Dutch Nazi-aligned/fascist party during WW2) as a nationalistic symbol. As a result, it has become a loose symbol of nationalism and efforts to bring it back are usually led by right wing parties, but even those don't push too hard.

The colour orange on it's own has, as a result, become a symbol associated with the monarchy, the country and sports.

So, in short, it's a bit of a complex situation. The orange colour on it's own is seen as a symbol of national pride, but the line to nationalism is drawn at including that colour in the actual flag.

Austria is a country in Dutch.

This is where it all goes wrong I'm afraid. Austria and the Netherlands are separate countries.

8

u/Ryan_NYXL Charles Leclerc Jul 09 '22

-4

u/zastava_ Aston Martin Jul 09 '22

2

u/yellow__blue Jul 09 '22

Which was called the Austrian Netherlands, so easy to confuse it

2

u/Weary-Tradition-8687 Jul 09 '22

Fair enough 😁

2

u/Cheeze0206 Jul 09 '22

Ehhh nah… Belgium is independent since 1830. The Austrian house of Habsburg ruled over the Netherlands from 1715 until 1795

1

u/Weary-Tradition-8687 Jul 09 '22

You do realise that Belgium and the Netherlands were only unified under/after Napoleon right? You're quite right that the Habsburgs ruled the southern Netherlands (aka Belgium), but the part that is known as the Netherlands now never was under their rule (nor were the two ever a single country until after 1815).

I'd also add that a LOT of Dutch people go to Austria for either summer or winter holidays. Furthermore plenty of enterprises such as restaurants/cafes in Tyrolean villages are owned and ran by Dutch people who moved here. The Dutch just really like Austria!

Fun fact: I was speaking with a security guy yesterday, and he mentioned that there are two Dutch campings up the high side of the track. As in, Dutch speaking people only. This surprised me as my camping site is also 90% Dutch, lol.

1

u/FlashFox24 McLaren Jul 09 '22

7

u/wEEzyNL Chequered Flag Jul 09 '22

The color orange refers to the family name of the Dutch Royal Family, the House of Orange-Nassau. Their ancestor, William of Orange, is the founding father of the Netherlands. Orange symbolizes national unity, and the Dutch signify national pride by wearing orange.

In a nutshell:

William of orange is our founding father

He helped the Dutch win the Dutch revolt, the war against the Catholic Spanish monarch in the Netherlands. And futher in history the house of orange has held off several invasion of the Netherlands. the Dutch flag used to have orange instead of red, this makes orange our national color.
