23

🤣it was kinda overshadowed by the rest of the absurdity of that story. Next to flying monkeys and the lollipop guild, it almost makes sense.

On a positive note, the Department of Transportation will now be responsible for any future snow removal from his doorstep.

94

u/kelsnuggets Dec 07 '22

Good news: no snow in Georgia 😂

46

u/Vanviator Dec 07 '22

Small correction, there is rarely snow in GA. I've lived in Augusta a few different times.

I was shocked when classes were canceled for non-accumulating snow. It was just lazily drifting down. But hey, surprise free day.

One winter (2004, I think) we woke up to everything having a coat of ice. Had to chip my way into my car and we still had class.

Dude making the call simply didn't have anything in his weather call book about ice. Lol.

Dusting of snow, shut it all down.

Literally coated in ice, eh.

18

u/mooseyjew Dec 07 '22

Don't forget the blizzard of 93. That was uh... Not fun at all lol

23

u/Alwaysafk Dec 07 '22

There was an event known as 'Snowmageddon' in 2014 where people were trapped in traffic or at work for a dusting of snow. It was nuts.

14

u/psychopythonmetrist Dec 07 '22

Lived through it. Was a wild time lol

I went on a walk near a highway and it looked like a zombie apocalypse. Hundreds of cars on the side of the road with no passengers.

9

u/spamster545 Dec 07 '22

If it sticks in the south we are in no way equipped to deal with it.

4

u/Noccalula Dec 07 '22

Snowmageddon just surprised all of us. IIRC, the forecast called for accumulation of snow and falling temperatures later in the day, but it ended up hitting early in the morning (in Alabama) instead of later on in the afternoon. Schools in Gadsden ended up getting cancelled around 9AM and by 10:30AM the roads were a slick mess. What would've taken me five minutes in a normal commute to pick up my ex's child from school that morning took thirty minutes one way out of an abundance of caution.

7

u/Alwaysafk Dec 07 '22

I was burning through PTO and missed the festivities. Some of my coworkers couldn't get out of the parking lot due to traffic and had to stay in the building.

6

u/Holy_Smoke Dec 08 '22

Wild is a 100% accurate way to describe the Snowpocalypse. I worked in Alpharetta, and had a client meeting in Marietta around noon. Wrapped up as schools had announced they were releasing the kids so metro Atlanta rush hour++ level traffic in addition to icy roads meant a typical 30 minute commute became 13 hours to get back to the office with my boss.

Had boss drop me off at a Waffle House around midnight as I was pretty hangry by that point, and my in-laws were about 1.5 miles so walking was a faster option than the traffic cluster fuck. Ended up slipping and straight busting my ass at a cross walk in front of who knows how many cars. I'm talking heels over head just utterly biffing it Looney Tunes style in my business suit, peacoat and dress balmorals. Luckily my pride was injured more than my body and I like to think that was a bright moment of comedy for a bunch of frustrated commuters.

You aren't kidding about that morning after being like a zombie apocalypse. Next morning I walked from my in-laws to the office in that eerie quiet you only get after a snow, a hundred cars abandoned on the sides of the highway and a car alarm wailing somewhere in the distance. Completely unique experience that I still remember vividly to this day over 8 years later.

4

u/psychoacer Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

I had to do temp work here in Chicago with a foot of snow because an office in Atlanta shut down for the day for less than 1in of snow.

3

u/MaraudingWalrus Dec 07 '22

Two days last winter I had snow on the ground in North Augusta. Killed some of my palm trees.

3

u/sgthulkarox Dec 07 '22

Saw it snow in Phoenix once. The combo of debris (Tire wear, oil, dust, no water for months) laden streets and people driving around with no tread was interesting.

These are called 'sliders' in tornado damage assessment. The house most likely wasn't bolted to the foundation so it makes it pretty easy to move by even a relatively weak tornado.

How does it still got the power line?

181

u/Snow_Wonder Dec 07 '22

Actual answer, I think the house was never truly airborn but instead pivoted around one corner, being scraped/dragged by the winds. With the pivot corner being the one with the power line.

Something like this.

51

u/FijiMeatball Dec 08 '22

Thank God it was anchored by the power line, else it would've completely run off!

35

u/ObsidianOne Dec 07 '22

Maybe the tornado moved the road underneath the house.

19

u/Enlight1Oment Dec 07 '22

It's the houses' kite string, how else do you think they kept it from blowing away?

4

u/77BakedPotato77 Dec 07 '22

This surprised the hell out of me too.

If you don't have a guy wire (support wire driven into a roof joist that pulls opposite of the power line) around the pipe riser the weight of the overhead wire often bends the pipe riser.

The overhead connections should be permanent crimps, but I would still have expected the pipe riser to be bent way worse than it is.

This was my parents’ other home on their property! My grandparents lived here until time took the both of them several years ago and luckily the family that was renting the home at the time just happened to be out of town. My parents had just survived a tornado scare the year before and then this happened.

Also really wild to log into Reddit and see your childhood home away from home on the front page.

5

u/d4rk_matt3r Dec 08 '22

I like to imagine that if someone were home, they just slept through the whole thing. They get up in the morning and say "I'm gonna go get the paper"

Then they are just standing in the doorway drinking their coffee saying like "Hmmm, something is different"

3

u/TheFoxThatIsSilver Dec 08 '22

Now I’m curious what happened to the renters after that. I’m sure your parents told them what happened. Did they help the family move elsewhere? Just generally curious

4

u/GonzoinKS Dec 08 '22

Can you answer a question to settle an argument. Was the bathtub still on the foundation? Or was it with the house?

→ More replies

5

u/eye-brows Dec 07 '22

Did they like..... put the house back? I am so morbidly fascinated and I know nothing about home ownership.

11

u/FearMjolnir Dec 07 '22

Lol no. It’s assumed to be an automatic loss with home insurance so they were covered for its loss, but it also landed on a “major” highway there in rural GA so the local Department of Transportation came out pretty quickly with their gigantic dozer and finished the job the tornado started. They actually had everything pretty much cleared up and out of the way within a few hours. Now there’s just an empty space where the home used to be.

6

u/eye-brows Dec 07 '22

Aw, bummer. I'm sorry your childhood home got launched, but I'm glad the renters weren't home at the time.

As you can tell, I am not from a part of the US that sees tornadoes. We get maybe a single EF-0 a year.

3

u/snertwith2ls Dec 08 '22

Allstate: that can be picked up and put back on the foundations, not a problem. Only a partial replacement of the roof is needed, and we’re only gonna pay for the siding needed to cover the scar.

Your deductible is $5,000, and the estimated cost of repairs is $4,897.38.
