Coolio died Wednesday in Los Angeles ... TMZ has learned. The rapper who achieved enormous success in the 90s was visiting a friend late Wednesday afternoon when he passed away.

Coolio's longtime manager, Jarez, says Coolio went to the bathroom at his friend's house, but when he didn't come after a while ... the friend kept calling for him, and eventually went in and found Coolio laying on the floor.

We're told the friend called EMTs, who arrived and pronounced Coolio dead on the scene -- and Jarez tells us the paramedics suspect he suffered cardiac arrest. An official cause of death has not been determined.

Coolio, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., came up on the L.A. rap scene in the late 80s, but blew up nationally in 1995 when he released "Gangsta's Paradise" for the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film, "Dangerous Minds."

The song reached #1 and stayed there for 3 weeks. While 'Paradise' became his signature hit, Coolio had several others ... including 1994's "Fantastic Voyage" -- which hit #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 -- as well as "1,2,3,4 (Sumpin' New)" and "It's All the Way Live (Now)."

Coolio was 59. RIP

Seeing as he died at 59 in 2022. I’m doing the math and he was in his early 30’s when he wrote the line “I’m 23 now but will I live to see 24.” Unless maybe he wrote that song in 87 and it blew up in 95.

Lots of people are afraid to ask for help, he probably went to the bathroom as he wasn’t feeling well, people will do this when choking and end up dying. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help

1.7k

u/walrus_breath Sep 29 '22

I’ve actually heard a lot of people feel like they have to poop when they’re actually suffering from a heart attack. It’s not uncommon to find heart attack victims on the toilet.

678

u/DAVENP0RT Sep 29 '22

The list of symptoms for heart attack is basically just a jumble of every single tiny thing that people dismiss on a daily basis. Arm pain, indigestion, sense of panic, stomach ache, tingling, dizziness, vomiting, and so much more. Plus, it can be any combination of the above, or just one thing. At a certain point, you either just ignore every little twinge you feel and hope for the best or you succumb to anxiety and suffer a heart attack from the stress.

352

u/UpDownLeftRightABLoL Sep 29 '22

Anxiety can also cause those symptoms in my personal experience, it's better to focus on other things and just live.

166

u/oozingdonut Sep 29 '22

Yep, very inconvenient to always be wondering if it’s regular anxiety or a heart attack.

Also costochondritis, some random inflammation of the cartilage that connects your sternum to your ribs that can cause sharp chest pain.

87

u/mother-of-pod Sep 29 '22

It does suck. I’ve got pretty consistent mild anxiety, but my real panic attacks hit occasionally and it feels like a completely different story.

My HR rockets up to 150+, I can feel my pulse in my neck, throat, fingertips, chest, ears, face, etc., I get short of breath, I can’t really articulate my thoughts or a source of this experience, and sometimes my reflux kicks in and I’ll puke a little. Allllllll of those, if you Google them while panicking (not recommended lmao) indicate heart attacks or strokes. And it’s so much worse than my usual anxiety that it no longer feels like anxiety or mood issues, but just a cardiovascular event so intense I can’t think of anything else.

I have gone to the urgent care for that once, and they called me silly for doing so when I am just anxious.

Then. I unknowingly got costochondritis one day (I believe from a bad sneeze), and my carpal tunnel was acting up, and I had a real panic attack. This left me with that same horrible HR and breathing/sweating/sickness issue, and numb arms and tight hands, and pretty bad chest pain when moving or trying to breathe. Went to the ER that time. They again told me to relax next time, but did help me understand what my chest was doing.

But. It sucks. Because I do get those attacks. But what if one day I am actually having an emergency and I’ve taught myself to try and ignore it? No bueno.

31

u/feebl Sep 29 '22

I have the same problem. The symptoms the panic attack cause feel exactly the same as the symptoms caused by having a heart attack. It’s so utterly terrifying it’s hard to explain or describe to other people. My advice would be to talk to a therapist to help you learn how to deal with the anxiety.

25

u/mother-of-pod Sep 29 '22

That’s the shitty thing is I really am doing much better with my general anxiety. I have had it treated and worked on it for about a decade. This past 18 months or so have been significantly easier. But they’ve also added those severe, acute attacks.

It’s almost like my body is confused as to why I’m not anxious every day for a few months so it decides to give me 3 months of anxiety in a single night.

The way weirder part, imo, is with my day-to-day anxiety I can almost always explain multiple factors contributing to different feelings I’m having.

The huge attacks have no “emotion” involved. I am not freaking out because of work, family, or worry—I am just getting physiological effects.

But. Still a work in progress ig. Always will be.

I have afib and IBS-C so I totally expect to go out this way.

21

u/Shayedow Sep 29 '22

This is actually one of my biggest fears. I also have IBS, it started just a few years ago but now I can't even take milk in my coffee, among many other things. I'm 43 and my poops have become somewhat a bit rougher, not to say they are harder, it's just harder to poop, even with a muffin a day. My biggest fear is dying on the toilet, for whatever reason. My family doesn't need that. They need me to die in my sleep first, maybe at my computer just browsing or playing a game second, maybe cooking dinner a third, and finally just WITH THEM while watching TV a fourth. I feel these are the best ways to die. Yet my wife coming home from work, seeing the bathroom door closed and me not at my computer, saying hi to me and me not answering and her thinking I just didn't hear her, and then time, time just keeps going on, and she begins to wonder, then gets a little scared and tries to ask me like " hey are you ok in there? ", then comes the panic as time goes on and I don't answer, and more time passes and she asks again, knocking on the door, until finally she says fuck it and opens the door, and either finds me just dead sitting on the toilet, or worse, on the floor with my pants around my ankles laying face first on the floor because I fell over during my death.

I hate this thought of my death. I'm afraid of dying this way more then I am of dying, I hate how the thought of how I die will effect my family over me. After all, I will be dead, and so will NOT care about my death, but my family most certainly will.

TLDR: Dying on the toilet will SUCK for your family. Don't push so hard.

Jokes aside, I was running on super low sleep a few weeks ago, thought I needed to take a shit, and suffered vasovagal syncope and woke up to EMTs breaking down my toilet door and hauling me off to the ER. I was 93/49 en route. And I’m generally hypertensive. Monitor your BP and feelings, people. Don’t die on the shitter.

You also don't know you might be about to die. The last thing you want to do is to make a fuss only to be told you were just constipated.

250

u/SilverProduce0 Sep 29 '22

Had a friend who went to the hospital with pain because some coworkers said she had appendicitis or maybe was in kidney failure.

They told her basically she just was too gassy and really needed to fart.

212

u/Turakamu Sep 29 '22

Sounds like my mom. She would hold in her farts until her slumber. Then should would rip holes in her pajamas farting as hard as possible.

And yes, I inherited her powers.

I was doing charity work in a remote area where if there was a medical emergency you had to be airlifted, as it was hours from any sort of medical facilities. One of the organizers told us about a time this girl was airlifted for a burst appendix, but it turned out she caught diarrhea and had been popping so much Imodium that she hadn't pooped in like two weeks.

I ate a pepperoni hot pocket for the first time in at least two decades some time in my 40s.

That night I found myself on the floor of my bathroom in a full, cold sweat wondering if I was going to have a heart attack or was in fact having one.

I blasted two farts in quick succession which provided a quick bout of relief. For the next hour it was cramps and the sweet, sweet relief of the occasional block rocker.

Listen up people, gas is no fucking joke, especially when youve never had it before.

When I was pregnant with my youngest, I would get gas pains so bad it felt like I'd somehow swallowed a knife and it was slowly stabbing holes through all of my intestines.

80

u/chadsomething Sep 29 '22

Boy do I got a story for you. One time in my mid 20s I was going through a bout of stomach problems. That's a whole separate story, but I woke up one morning feeling just fine so I decided to have a good ol fashioned frito chili pie.

A whole can of chili, half a bag of fritos, and like half a pound of shredded cheese. I was on heaven for an hour till my stomach did a flip and I felt like I got stabbed in the gut. This pain spread out throughout my whole body. It gave me a headache like I never had before. I couldn't think straight, my chest hurt. I broke out in sweats and could hardly walk straight. I kept trying to not call an ambulance, because I was 25, I couldn't be having a combination heart attack/stroke.

It was about 3 or 4 in the morning while I was crying from the pain browsing random IBS forums trying to figure out the issue. Saw were somebody posted that terrible gas could cause headaches, chest pains, all over body aches. So I took a handful of gas x, being ready to try just about anything. 30 seconds later I start burping and farting uncontrollable, like a loud brrrrrrrapppp and thbbbbttttppp at the same time i swear one fart lasted a good 3 minutes. I could literally feel pressure leave my head and stomach as copious amounts of methane filled my bedroom. Paint started peeling, birds fell dead out the air, my CO alarm went off. But God do I understand the definition of relief now.

Don't underestimate how bad gas can make you feel.

Totally. I had some pretty bad stomach ache and pyking Saturday night had an awful tone trying to sleep. At 3am wife woke up and she could tell i wasnt doing well. I kept telling her I was fine and didn't need to go to the er just to be told I have gas or something. Didn't want to spend the time or money on a trip to the er. 6 hours later i was down one apendix and it of surgery. Super happy I went but am not looking forward to the bill.

19

u/Turakamu Sep 29 '22

I never really got appendix stuff.

I woke up one morning in tremendous pain. Fever, felt sick. I went to the ER. I thought it was my appendix but no, just my pancreas trying to kill me.

I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. That was with me going right away. Have a friend that almost died because he put off going to the hospital for 2 days. His was a burst appendix

Cardiac fucking arrest. Tough way to go. RIP, Coolio.

142

u/Wsemenske Sep 29 '22

When you die you go into cardiac arrest by definition. People often confuse heart attacks and cardiac arrest.

27

u/ShithouseFootball Sep 29 '22

Im one of those people, whats the difference?

45

u/dont_comment_ Sep 29 '22

A heart attack is when one of the coronary arteries becomes blocked. The heart muscle is robbed of its vital blood supply and, if left untreated, will begin to die because it is not getting enough oxygen. A cardiac arrest is when a person's heart stops pumping blood around their body and they stop breathing normally.

→ More replies

34

u/easkyla Sep 29 '22

Heart attack means that something happened to the muscle of the heart it’s self that made it stop beating. So like a little clot or plaque buildup stops blood from getting to part of the heart, which then dies, which then causes the heart not to be able to pump blood correctly anymore which then causes the person to die.

Cardiac arrest just means the heart stopped. It doesn’t mean the cause of it stopping was damage to the heart muscle. There could be an underlying condition that causes it. Getting hit hard enough in the chest can stop your heart from pumping. If you ever feel like your heart skips a beat? Sometimes you can get stuck that way with the heart fluttering and not really pumping blood and that will kill you. Just basically it meads his heart stopped beating for some reason.

Also I’m not a medical professional I just like to make myself worry too much by reading shit.

16

u/SDryluth Sep 29 '22

Fun heart fact time. You know that lurching feeling when your heart skips a beat? That is actually because your heart compensates by doing an extra big beat to make up for the missed one. That extra big beat is the lurching you are feeling.

I also didn't know his career started all the way back in 87. Didn't realize he was in a group with WC (Westside Connection fame), before either of them were well known, in the very early 90s.

He also put out 3 albums in the 2000s, but he had fallen out of the mainstream by then.

This is a surprise…Gangsta’s Paradise is one of the best hip hop songs of all time. I’ve always liked his other stuff too. And of course, the Kenan and Kel theme. On top of that that hairstyle is iconic. Old school wise who would of thought we’d lose him and Biz Markie so soon.

Edit: someone find that thread where Coolio went to a college campus and cooked for the students

53

u/polarbearrape Sep 29 '22

Also Gift of Gab...

31

u/bonyponyride Sep 29 '22

Aw damn. I missed that one. Back in the early 2000s, Blackalicious gave me permission to video record and take photos of them during a two night stand they were playing in the city where I lived. That was before cell phone cameras were everywhere. I think they were the biggest act to give me permission to do that.

Yeah the CTA guy at the California stop had everyone singing Gangsta's Paradise waiting for the pink line. I definitely heard some of Coolio's set that day. Crazy he's gone now so soon after a show.

Wow. One of the most uncomfortable interviews I ever had in my radio career was with Coolio.

It was when Gangsta's Paradise was blowing up, and he was the headliner at a concert. I interviewed him outside of the venue with a whole bunch of people around waiting to get in.

He was not having any of it. Did not want to talk to me. One word answers for everything. Finally, I gave up, said 'is there anything you want to say to all these people?" and handed him the mic.

It was like throwing a switch. He took the mic and started to freestyle and hype up the crowd. He handed the mic back and walked away.

Anyway, RIP.

438

u/savax7 Sep 29 '22

I worked venue security (bouncer) for a Coolio show maybe 4 years ago. When he wrapped up the show, he stood behind me while I tried my best to do some crowd control to get him from from the stage back to where the green room was. He was stopping to shake hands and take selfies. Afterwards he came out and said thanks for not letting the crowd crush him. It was cool to meet him growing up listening to his albums. RIP.

I was beginning my radio career right around the time he launched C U When U Get There as a single. He came in to do our morning show and I recall our host lamenting about what a dry interview it was, so this totally checks out. Then again, he was selling out arenas, and he ended up marrying one of our other coworkers. So he definitely had his charm.

He actually had a cookbook published several years ago that I got my wife as kind of a gag gift. His recipe for alfredo sauce is superb.

The cookbook is the greatest! His seasonings are referred to as nickelbags and dimebags, as opposed to teaspoons and tablespoons.

My wife will occasionally ask me "what ever happened to Coolio?" And I would joke that he was killed by a pterodactyl, because of his role in the Syfy classic "Pterodactyl".

It's a stupid joke, but it always made me laugh.

15

u/felinebeeline Sep 29 '22

I don't have to ask you where you've been

'Cause the matches in your purse say 'Holiday Inn'

'A mind is a terrible thing to waste' that was the slogan

But now it's '95 and it's 'don't forget the Trojan'

Latex, safe sex, you better learn to get hip to the facts

Before you react or, end up in a box on your back

The year Too Hot was released was when HIV-related deaths peaked ('95)

I wonder if it helped bring the rates down. Anyway, RIP Coolio.

I met Coolio. Rather, he served me his Coolio Soul Rolls at a big food/music event at prospect park about 10 years ago. He was working hard at his station and super proud of this food. I couldn't believe the dude was in his booth working the kitchen and running the cash register but there he was hustling. Seemed to really enjoy what he was doing and while I thought the rolls themselves were okay (think of an egg roll with different spices) his pepper sauce he served them with was legit. A lot of people didn't recognize him or didn't care enough to holler at him but I did and he appreciated that I knew him but he insisted that I really focus on his food, not his celebrity. Always liked his jams but that interaction with him made me a bigger fan. RIP Coolio you will always be a real one
